The mission

Datura and Damiana are high performance infiniband cluster, primarily used for small and large scale simulations of black holes and neutron stars in order to calculate the resulting gravitational radiation. The cluster are equipped with 7008 GB main memory, 3504 Cores, 462 compute nodes, 3 visualization machines, 26 storage server, 32 storage targets and 3 head-nodes. The main communication and storage network is based on Infiniband DDR 20Gb/s / QDR 40Gb/s to benefit of low latency and high bandwidth. To achieve the maximum throughput and to handle the huge amount of parallel I/O operations, damiana and datura are using a 4-folded multi-homed global lustre file system with 424TB of disc space.

The images show the simulation of two neutron stars with different masses inspiraling and then merging into a single object that collapses almost immediately to a black hole.
